My name is Brenda Chatman, and I have been a musician since I was a toddler. I have always loved music, and over the years, I have performed for people all over the world. I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Oakland University in Rochester Hills, MI. After graduation, I didn't work in Music education immediately; I worked for Chrysler, a major car company. During that time, I went to school and learned sound recording from the Recording Institute of Detroit. I was able to intern at a recording studio called Nation Studios, where I met Eminem, as he was recording the last parts of his first album. Two years later, I became a music teacher, teaching in various schools across the state of Michigan. I have experience teaching various band instruments, including flute, saxophone, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, drums, recorder, bass guitar, piano, and voice. I was recruited to be a music teacher for The Mattie Moss Clark Conservatory of Music by legendary gospel artist, Dorinda Clark Cole, and I taught there for a number of years until the school was permanently closed. I have also been a choir teacher. I have traveled the United States, Japan, and Europe as a professional vocalist, singing as a member of a 1960's Motown group, and I am still singing and traveling with them today, and I am the Music Director of the group. I am a bass guitarist for two local groups. I enjoy all types of music, and I love going to concerts. My teaching style is more laid back, providing an atmosphere where my students can learn at their own pace. I have a knack for identifying what needs to be addressed when watching students play their instruments and how to develop their musicianship.
