“I specialize in Classical Piano Performance, Jazz Piano Techniques And Performance, and Music Theory”
About Me
Hello there, prospective student! I am Frederick Harris, a veteran pianist and instructor of music for well over 30 years. I am a classically trained performer with BM and MM degrees from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music (1995), and have performed as a concert pianist, jazz and church pianist, internationally. I have also taught all ages over that time, including privately and in institutions from primary through collegiate, in my former San Francisco. Post-secondary institutions taught include the City College of San Francisco, Stanford University and San Jose State University.
Through my multi-faceted career, I have attained a wealth of musical knowledge and experience of application. This has afforded me a unique, successful teaching philosophy based on a rigorous, traditional pianistic foundation of technique, theoretical knowledge and standard performance repertoire of the classical idiom, applicable across the musical spectrum where the piano is found. This has served me in every mode of musical expression that I have experienced; not only as a pianist, but as a conductor and drummer/percussionist as well. Study with me, whether in "classical" or other musical styles, always references elements of my training.
A good match as student with me is one who:
• is interested in the instrument (vs. "being made to" study it)
• is compelled by that interest to play it
• accepts that it is an ongoing endeavor that only works best with consistent, serious effort: half-hour to hour, 4 days of 7 weekly, minimum
• has the time, and prioritizes making time, for that cultivation
• is patient with self, while self-driven to succeed, understanding that accomplishment takes time – determined by how much time one spends cultivating
• is astute of intellect, as the piano is, arguably, the most demanding and built-in-processes of instruments for cultivating listening, comprehension and emotional skills of musical expression.
• is equipped with a piano or 88-key keyboard, who seeks online study; including a deskt/laptop and phone, both internet/wifi ready, and a hands-free phone/camera tripod for side view of piano keyboard during lesson.
*I only offer online lessons currently.
What a student can expect over time, in kind with the above, is the indescribable satisfaction felt at every accomplishment, large and small – of which, there are no "small" ones, really – attained through regular work and tenacity of pursuit. The equation:
Teaching x Discovery(work) = Playing[better]
is the same, regardless of the style of playing, and is the only equation that truly makes demonstrative results that build and last, over continuous playing time.
If this very broad overview has piqued your interest, I would love to hear from you! I love playing and teaching the instrument and look forward to ushering you to a new and/or better pianistic you!
Many thanks for exploring me via CanKnowPiano,
Frederick Harris

Frequently Asked Questions
How much are piano lessons?
My lessons start at the CanKnowPiano rates of $50/half-hour, $75/45 minutes, and $95/hour. Advanced Teen and Adult lessons are only offered on a per hour basis.
What is a good age to start piano lessons?
Five years old and above. The hand size and natural dexterity/strength of a young child should be suitable to begin study by that age, or older.
I watch YouTube tutorials on playing piano music. Do you teach from YouTube?
Though I have a slowly growing number of performance and tutorial videos on my YT channel, I do not teach songs or others' pedagogy found on YT, outrightly. While students have brought this modality to me in the past, if we continue to work on that material, we proceed to do so from score (written music).
Do I have to know how to read music to learn the piano [with you]?
No, absolutely not. However, to study the instrument with any seriousness, and not [wish to] learn reading and aural (hearing) skills that are part of the process, is like going to elementary school but not learning the alphabet, how it makes words by spelling, thoughts by sentences and grammar, or reading. In study with me, students learn how to read/write standard notation, how to hear technical aspects that comprise music, and how to listen and respond, actively, to musical expression.
I have a very busy life. I can only practice for a few minutes once a week...maybe...
In this case, considering taking lessons is not a practical pursuit of activity and wasted investment, as the study of anything worthwhile - not the teacher, really, demands more than a passive "when I can get to it" ability or mentality. It has to be a priority, at every level of engagement wanting meaningful progress. Whether with a teacher or from a screen, the learning comes via the student's application of what is taught, moreover, than the teaching of it.
