“I specialize in Practical Piano Playing”
About Me
With over four decades of experience as a band director and private instructor, I bring both depth and practicality to every lesson. I hold a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from SUNY Fredonia and a Master of Science in Music Education from The College of Saint Rose. Over the years, I’ve taught a wide range of students—beginners through advanced—across piano, band and orchestral instruments, as well as rhythm section instruments such as drum set and bass, with experience in styles including jazz and rock.
My teaching approach is centered on developing focused, engaged students into confident, capable musicians. I specialize in working with younger learners who are motivated and able to concentrate during lessons—typically starting piano students around ages 7–8 (and as young as 5 with active parent involvement), and band/orchestral students from about age 9 and up. This approach is structured and skill-building, and tends to be the best fit for students who are ready to actively participate and progress week to week.
For band and orchestral students, I reinforce and strengthen school instruction while emphasizing physical coordination, control, and the music theory needed for real understanding. For piano students, I’ve developed a “Practical Piano” method that integrates theory, reading, and hands-on playing, helping students become independent at the keyboard. The goal is not just performance, but the ability to sit down and play confidently in real-life situations—whether for enjoyment, accompaniment, or supplemental income.
Because of this structured, forward-moving approach, my studio is generally best suited for younger beginners and developing students rather than adults revisiting piano casually. Students who work with me gain more than technical ability—they build independence, musical understanding, and lasting confidence in their skills. If your goal is to make music a meaningful and usable part of your life, I can help you get there.
