Learn Piano with Sebastian Wen
“I specialize in Classical Piano Performance, Music Theory, and Music Theory For Beginners”
About Me
Sebastian Wen is a highly skilled classical and conservatory trained pianist that has been performing for 16 years and teaching for 5. His goal is to teach strong music fundamentals and instill a love for music that aligns internally with the student, allowing them to apply the knowledge they learn in ways they naturally desire. He approaches each student with highly individualized lesson plans tailored to each student's needs, goals, and learning styles. Despite his strong background of classical music, he is happy to teach any genre or style of music his students desire, even spending much time himself playing piano versions of film/TV, video game, and pop music. Lessons with Sebastian are relaxed, approachable, and always focused on creating a positive and rewarding experience.
Sebastian was born in Memphis, Tennessee and began taking piano lessons at age 7 from the request of his grandfather. He immediately fell in love with the instrument, practicing for hours almost every day. Sebastian has a natural affinity for music, developing perfect pitch and the ability to learn pieces by ear within the first few months of his lessons. He later moved to Cary, North Carolina and began studying under Dr. Kent Lyman, a piano professor and the director of piano studies at Meredith College. By the time he was 9 years old, he was already learning advanced and musically complex pieces seen in university-level study. He began competing in local and national competitions, placing in a large number of them and garnering state-wide attention. At age 15, Sebastian's incredibly expressive and technical playing was noticed by professors from the UNC School of the Arts, where he attended the university for high school and college. During his time at UNCSA, he received intensive training under Dr. Dmitri Vorobiev, a Russian pianist with international acclaim. He later studied at UNC Greensboro, but returned to Dr. Vorobiev at UNCSA to continue his degree, where he prepared for the Chopin and Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition.
Outside of piano, Sebastian is also a first responder and works part-time as a paramedic. He regularly performs for nursing homes, memory care facilities, and retirement communities. When he has extra time on his hands, he loves to play video games, fold origami, and absolutely shred some Metallica on the electric guitar.
