Learn Piano with Chris Ferrell
“I specialize in Improv From Chord Charts And Lead Sheets”
About Me
Music is my love language. I’ve been playing the piano since I was 8 years old and began teaching when my best friend asked me to give her daughter piano lessons. I shadowed a few piano teachers and began to take get involved in professional teachers associations before taking on additional students.
Each student has an individual goal when they enter into piano lessons. I find out the goals and strive to teach the student to learn the desired music preference. I ask for a 6-8 week commitment before someone can determine if piano lessons will work for them. It’s a fun and productive skill or hobby that will last for a lifetime.
If someone prefers math, the written notes seem to come easier verses a student who loves English class or reading will typically be able to improvise and prefer chord charts.
Singer songwriters are usually interested in learning to play good enough to play easy music verses learning a classical piece.
I listen to what a student wants and we go from there.
Studies show that piano lessons are very beneficial for people who have ADD and ADHD. Using your hands and mind connects both sides of the brain while playing the piano.
Each lesson is individualized to what works best and what is wanted by the student or the parents. I use an app on the iPad that has about 75 lesson books. It allows me to follow along with exactly what a student is playing, which is extremely helpful for in line lessons. While using the app isn’t mandatory, it has numerous benefits. Playing along with a song seems to help a student learn new song quicker. All of the books on the app are also available for purchase in a music store or on Amazon. I recommend using a real lesson book along with the on line app for the beginner.
I also teach Nashville numbers. It is a different approach that most singer/songwriters prefer. It makes accompanying much easier.
It feels like I’ve been playing the piano my entire life. From church stages to little venues in Nashville, I still enjoy playing. I have piano/vocal students on Broadway, writing for labels and a few you can hear on the radio. No matter who you are, I enjoy teaching children or adults who are beginners all the way up to an artist who wants to be able to actually play or write their own music.
