About Me
Grace Kang is a Korean-American pianist and music educator currently pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Music Performance with a minor in Psychology at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), where she has been studying since 2020. She currently studies under Dr. Liana Pailodze Harron, Assistant Professor of Piano at UMBC (August 2025–present), and previously studied with Dr. Teodora Adzharova (2023–2024) and Dr. Daniel Pesca (2020–2023), now Assistant Professor of Composition at the Eastman School of Music. Grace has also received mentorship from Hyun Sook Park, Professor at the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University (2020–2021).
At UMBC, Grace has actively performed as a soloist and chamber musician since 2020. She has been a member of the UMBC Chamber Players under Dr. Airi Yoshioka since 2022 and performed with the UMBC Wind Ensemble under Dr. Brian Kaufman during the 2023–2024 academic year. Her performance venues include UMBC’s Linehan Concert Hall, the Peabody Institute, and the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center at the University of Maryland. Grace has also participated in piano concerto competitions at UMBC in 2022 and 2023, performing works by Beethoven and Mozart to broaden her musical experience.
Grace is the recipient of several awards, including first prize in the Piano Competition at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center in 2018, and the UMBC Music Performance Fellowship scholarship, generously supported by Dr. Michael E. Richards, during the Fall 2020 academic year.
Since 2018, Grace has offered private piano lessons to students ranging from young beginners to adults. She has served as an accompanist for the Marriotts Ridge High School Madrigals, Women’s Choir, and Men’s Choir during the 2021–2022 school year. Early in her teaching career, Grace collaborated with Park Su Hyang, a certified music teacher and therapist, at Bethel Presbyterian Church from 2018 to 2019.
Grace’s teaching philosophy focuses on fostering creativity, confidence, and self-expression, guiding students to develop their own unique musical voice. With her combined background in music and psychology, Grace plans to pursue graduate studies in music therapy after earning her Bachelor of Arts in Music Performance in December 2025. She is particularly interested in exploring how music therapy can be used to support children with mental and physical health disorders, as well as individuals with mental health challenges and neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease. Grace hopes to apply her knowledge to inspire and assist these populations in improving their emotional, cognitive, and physical well-being through music.
She is deeply thankful to her mentors, and professors for their continued support and encouragement.
