Learn Piano with Nydia Kelly
“I specialize in Classical Piano, Music Theory, and Popular Music Chord Charts”
About Me
My name is Nydia. I’ve been teaching privately since 2006. I combine my classical music training with a fun everyday approach to teaching music. I teach both practical and theory. For the younger kids I’ve developed a card game to help students learn note names, rests and their values in a fun way. I typically do 2 recitals a year, one in the spring and on the fall. I like to theme the recitals so students get a chance to be exposed to all types of music.
My classical training includes ABRSM and Trinity College music exams. I refined my chart reading skills in college at Berklee College of Music where I majored in music.
I am also the lead vocalist of an alternative metal band called TheUnknown. I write all the music and lyrics for our songs and I also encourage my students to write their own music. That was actually on of the recital themes. I even taught the students how to write the music charts and/Notation for their songs and then I had them published.
Over the years I’ve taught students of all ages, from young beginners taking their very first lesson to adults returning to music after many years away. My goal is to create a positive, encouraging environment where students can build confidence while developing strong musical skills. Lessons are tailored to each student’s interests, whether they enjoy classical music, pop, film music, worship music, songwriting, improvisation, or learning to play by ear.
I believe music education should be both structured and enjoyable. Students learn technique, theory, rhythm, reading, and musicianship, but they also learn how to express themselves creatively through music. Many of my students participate in recitals, compose their own pieces, and gain skills that help them become independent musicians.
As a working performer, songwriter, and educator, I bring real-world musical experience into my teaching. I strive to help every student develop not only musical ability but also confidence, discipline, creativity, and a lifelong appreciation for music.
