Piano Lessons in Black Mountain
Learn Piano with Susan Persons
“I specialize in Classically Trained - Performance”
About Me
My familial name is Susie, born in Appleton Wisconsin, seventh of eight children and a musical family; i remember watching my older brother playing “Bumble Boogie” - fingers flying and thought, I want to do that. The lessons didn’t start for real until the 8th grade, but I was the one who kept up through high school and into college, having also taken up the oboe in the 4th grade.
It was my first piano teacher that gave me ideas for the best approach; Mondays after school I’d walk downtown to Heid Music, up to the second floor and trying to warm my fingers; these are the fondest memories for me to this day, and the learning led to more learning.
I haven’t taught in some years now; started after returning from Germany and marrying a trumpet player who had served in the Army Band with me. I believe the best method is still classically oriented; scales, key signatures, time signatures, exercises - I am not into the number system, but teach intervals and basic music theory. I am flexible in style and approach, as each student is unique; I try to read that, discuss everything I’m doing, and go at each student’s pace.
Throughout my adult life, I have been involved in providing music at church; this involves accompanying choirs and small groups, being a part of the worship team, and also working with children for various special services. I played for Christian Children’s Theatre, kids from neighboring churches, third through eighth grade. I love working with children, and guarantee to work at making each student feel comfortable and provide constant encouragement.
I love the piano; having lessons and learning to play has truly been and continues to be one of the greatest joys of my life. I want to pass along this knowledge and joy! Please give me a try. I will come to your house, and will also soon be able to teach out of my own studio.
Thank you so much for your consideration. ~Susie

Frequently Asked Questions
How much do I charge for lessons?
Lessons are $30 for 30 minutes, or $45 for for 45 minutes
Where does the piano lesson take place?
I am working with my husband on a home studio, but until then, and even after then, I can travel to the student’s home.
What is the best age to begin piano lessons?
I believe the best age is right around the 3rd grade, 8 or 9 years of age. This again depends on the individual, but if the desire is there, the child is old enough to understand the commitment, and we can make it fun to learn!
