Piano Lessons in Black Mountain

My familial name is Susie and although I have not taught lessons in some years, piano remains my passion and I have a keen interest in bringing kids into the joy that is music. I began with oboe in the fourth grade, but watched as older siblings practiced and had the desire to learn piano much younger. I started lessons in the eighth grade in Appleton, Wisconsin, Monday evenings walking from school to the upper floor of Heid Music, downtown, not far from Lawrence University where my mother sang Handel’s Messiah every Christmas, and I later also took some oboe lessons from a Lawrence University student, learning to make my own reeds. Then it was college for a year and a half in music education and music therapy before my decision to be a musician in the Army Band! This took me overseas and gave me much performance experience in various genres, piano and oboe and percussion, classical, marching, stage band, etc…taught piano after returning from Germany, 10 years with an average of 20 students. Good in communicating with kids and inspiring them to gain knowledge in something they can use throughout life! What I love most is finding any way I can to teach the concept of reading music, a different language, yet natural and also mathematical. It is an inspiring and rewarding experience to all parties involved, when communication combined with a feel for individual differences in understanding results in a priceless enlightenment - goals to gain a feel for each individual style and pace. I will develop a plan to fit each student. I am ready to dedicate myself to find new ways of teaching, while depending also on tried and true methods and excercises.

I am in process of developing my own studio at home in Henderson, but I am happy to travel to students’ homes for lessons. I do my best to make the learning fun!
