About Me
Hello, and thank you for visiting my teaching profile.
My name is Dr. Ashton D. Jones, and I have been teaching music since 2018. Throughout my career, I have worked with students at the middle school, high school, collegiate, and adult levels, teaching piano, organ, voice, and musicianship while helping students develop confidence, discipline, and a lifelong appreciation for music.
My teaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that every student learns differently. I draw from a variety of pedagogical approaches and tailor each lesson to the individual needs, goals, and learning style of the student. Whether you are a beginner learning your first notes on the piano, an organist seeking to improve technique and hymn playing, a vocalist preparing for performance, or an advanced musician refining your skills, lessons are designed with your specific goals in mind.
What makes my teaching unique is the breadth of experiences I bring into the studio. My musical journey began in the Pentecostal church, where I was immersed in gospel music, hymnody, accompaniment, and collaborative music-making from an early age. Over the years, those experiences expanded to include accompanying singers, performing on both operatic and concert stages, conducting choirs, serving as a church musician, and teaching in a variety of educational settings. These experiences allow me to help students connect technical skills with practical, real-world musicianship.
Professionally, I serve as Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities at Texas Southern University, where I teach and mentor the next generation of musicians. My experiences as a performer, conductor, accompanist, church musician, and educator shape every lesson I teach.
Above all, I believe music lessons are about more than learning notes and rhythms. They are opportunities for mentorship, personal growth, character development, and artistic expression. My goal is to help students become not only stronger musicians, but also confident and thoughtful individuals who find joy and meaning through music.
I look forward to helping you achieve your musical goals.
