Learn Piano with Ru Zhang
“I specialize in Musical Theater Voice, Classical Piano Performance, and Pop Singing”
About Me
Ru Zhang is a Juilliard-trained pianist, vocalist, and educator with over a decade of teaching experience, working with children, teens, and adults at all levels—from first-time beginners to pre-professional students. A dual-degree graduate of The Juilliard School, Ru brings world-class training into lessons that are warm, motivating, and carefully tailored to each student’s goals.
Ru’s teaching approach blends strong technical foundations with creativity and musical expression. Lessons are designed to keep students engaged through clear goals, age-appropriate repertoire, and positive reinforcement, helping them build confidence alongside skill. His multidisciplinary background in piano, voice, and musical theater allows him to offer a well-rounded and highly individualized learning experience.
Students of Ru’s have achieved a wide range of successes, including acceptances to top colleges and conservatories, professional theater work, and lead roles on Broadway shows such as The Outsiders, Romeo & Juliet, The Music Man, Mrs. Doubtfire, A Bronx Tale, Annie, The Lion King, A Christmas Story, and Ragtime. He regularly prepares students for auditions, competitions, academic programs, and performance opportunities, while also supporting those who study music for personal growth and enjoyment.
In addition to private teaching, Ru currently serves as visiting faculty at The Juilliard School, where he's been teaching musical theater to dancers for 4 years. As an active performer, he has appeared at venues such as Carnegie Hall and Jazz at Lincoln Center.
Ru’s studio environment is supportive, focused, and encouraging, offering a welcoming atmosphere where students feel challenged, confident, and excited to learn. His goal is not only to help students succeed musically, but to foster a lifelong love of music.
Teaching Philosophy
Ru’s teaching is grounded in over a decade of experience working with students of all ages and levels, from young beginners to advanced performers. He believes that strong technique and musical understanding should serve creativity and confidence, not pressure or perfectionism. Each lesson is thoughtfully tailored to the student’s age, personality, and goals—whether that means building foundational skills, preparing for auditions, exams, or competitions, or simply developing a lifelong passion of music.
Students stay motivated through clear goals, engaging repertoire, and a supportive, encouraging studio atmosphere. Ru’s multidisciplinary background in piano, voice, and musical theater allows him to offer a unique, well-rounded approach that connects technique with real musical expression. Just as importantly, they leave lessons feeling confident, capable, and excited to keep learning.
