Learn Piano with Dayton Harris
“I specialize in Lead Sheets, Music Theory, and Contemporary Christian Music”
About Me
I started playing piano at the age of four, legs swinging from the piano bench at my weekly private lessons. Fast-forward and now I have a master's degree in music theory from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and a bachelor's degree in applied piano. I began teaching professionally in Orlando, FL in 2021 and recently moved to Chattanooga, TN. I love making music and especially love teaching piano, both in-person and online, because of how music can connect us to each other and to deeper parts of ourselves.
In lessons with me, you can expect low-pressure instruction blending time-tested curriculum with assignments individualized to you and your learning goals. These are some values in my lessons:
1. Students learn not just "what" but "how":
— in practicing (you learn what to play, AND also how to choose and apply different practice strategies)
— in music's emotional content (you learn what about the music itself contributes to its emotional effects, AND then how to better direct the emotional content of your own music and how to better understand and appreciate your own emotional responses to music)
2. Students learn how to play (or play better) from lead sheets and chord charts. This is such a useful skill in the modern musical landscape for a variety of contexts.
3. We incorporate as much simplicity, individualization, and fun as possible. I work hard to streamline the scheduling, billing, materials, and other logistics so that the maximum of focus and energy can be devoted to your musical journey.
Whether you are a beginner or an advanced keyboard player, I would love to hear about your musical goals and bring my theoretical understanding, technical abilities, and teaching perspective to help you become the piano player you want to be!

Frequently Asked Questions
"Where do you teach?"
I teach in my students' homes for those in the Chattanooga, TN area, and I teach online with a multi-camera setup for those who prefer that.
"Do I need a fancy setup for online lessons?"
In short, no-- lessons will work best if you have one device to sit to the side of your piano-- to look at my demonstrations and so I can see a profile view of you at the piano-- and a second device sitting on the piano's music stand-- to access the digital assignments app and for looking at music. It's preferable if both of these are either tablets or laptop computers rather than phones (avoiding squinting to see), but let me know if this is an issue and we can troubleshoot.
