About Me
Rory Dowse brings over two decades of piano teaching experience and conservatory training to students of all ages and skill levels in North Phoenix. Holding a Master's degree in Piano Performance from the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, England, Rory combines advanced pedagogical methods with a genuine passion for music education. His teaching approach draws from a rich musical lineage traceable to Beethoven himself, blended with modern insights from his academic research on musical form and historical performance.
Before earning his Master's, Rory completed his Bachelor of Music with First-Class Honours at Queen's University Belfast, graduating with top marks in his year while studying concurrently at the Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin under Dr. Peter Tuite. His academic achievements include numerous awards and scholarships, and his research on Beethoven's piano works has resulted in published articles and conference presentations across Europe.
Rory's professional experience extends beyond the studio. He has served as Director of a US national piano school, an elected Trustee for the European Piano Teachers Association, and Teaching Assistant at the University of Manchester. Currently a member of the Music Teachers National Association, he remains actively engaged in advancing piano pedagogy. As a performer, Rory has presented recitals throughout the US, UK, and Ireland, including performances of late Beethoven sonatas and Brahms works. He serves as a Music Director at a church in North Phoenix and has received masterclasses from distinguished pianists including Leon Fleisher, Dame Fanny Waterman, and Stephen Hough.
Rory's teaching philosophy centers on developing both technical excellence and deep musical understanding. For younger students, he incorporates elements of the Kodály, Orff, and Dalcroze methodologies, creating engaging learning environments that build solid foundations. As a father of two young boys, he brings personal insight into child development and age-appropriate instruction. For adult learners, Rory designs focused sessions with practice strategies tailored to busy professional schedules, fostering a supportive community where adults can explore piano at any stage of life.
His students consistently achieve Distinction-level results in graded examinations, with many advancing to diploma-level study. The studio hosts annual recitals at the prestigious Steinway Hall in Scottsdale, providing students with performance opportunities on world-class Steinway concert grand pianos. Rory offers flexible lesson formats including in-person, online, and hybrid options, ensuring accessibility without compromising instructional quality. His dual piano setup featuring both acoustic and digital instruments enables seamless demonstrations and duets, maximizing lesson efficiency.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much are piano lessons?
Piano lessons start with an introductory lesson. After that, pricing varies depending on the lesson format and duration. Prices start at $189 per month for weekly 30-minute sessions, though many students prefer 60-minute sessions, which cost $378 p/m. The best approach is to book an introductory lesson first, which gives us a chance to discuss the pricing options that work best for you.
What age should I start piano lessons?
The wonderful thing about piano is that you can start at almost any age! Children as young as 4 years old can begin lessons with age-appropriate teaching methods that make learning fun and engaging. If you're a teenager or adult, don't worry—it's never too late to start! Many successful piano students begin in their 20s, 40s, or even as retirees. With consistent practice, you can make excellent progress regardless of what age you start.
