About Me
Welcome to piano lessons! I hope to inspire your creativity, love of music, challenge you to grow, and foster friendship and connection as we learn from each other. I hope playing can become a lifelong outlet and source of confidence for you. I have twenty five years experience teaching piano, specializing in early childhood development, strategies to reduce adult performance anxiety, and coordinate movement to reduce injury.
I obtained my BA in music and Masters in education from PSU in 2011, while working as a part time piano teacher after school. Teaching all ages, many of my students from the age of 6 until graduating from high school, I have a deep love for children and raised four of my own. It’s a gift to experience the world through their eyes and be a part of their enthusiasm for learning. They have taught me there are no mistakes only opportunities. Redirection through questions and logical consequence encourage learners to try new things and make lessons a no pressure, fun experience, tailored to each individual learning style. In a typical lesson we warm up with scale work, review last week’s assignment’s, and work over any problem areas encountered in practice. Each new lesson focuses on a new skill, with games, duets, improv, finger exercises, theory, and technique in coordinate movement. I offer two recitals yearly if desired.
I began playing piano at eleven and quickly started composing and singing while playing. I have been in choirs every year of my education often working as accompanist or conductor. I worked as director of music for the LDS church for ten years playing organ, piano, directing choir for children, adults, and performing as a vocalist and ensemble member. After college I began performing in Portland bands as a keyboardist and singer. Joytribe, Anikka Forrest Project, Girl Cant Help It (a tribute to journey), and Bridgetown Get Down. I put an original album out in 2011 entitled Tasha Flynn Band - a mix of rock and RnB. I did my student teaching in choir directing and have written compositions for choir, woodwinds and piano.
