About Me
Greetings future piano player! I have been playing teaching piano for many years, as many piano teachers have. What makes my students and parents appreciate me is that 1. I don’t lie to them and say their playing is wonderful when it’s not; 2. I offer opportunities for students to perform, including the NYSSMA solo festival, but do not require any performances. 3. I am a piano judge for NYSSMA. 4. I am a current organist and accompanist, which means I offer students opportunities to participate in my own music work ie: turning pages for me, accompany my choirs, play the organ, when they have been playing a piece particularly well. Seeing me actually work in the music business is a usually inspiring activity for students. 5. My degrees Bachelors and Masters, are in music education and have experience working with all types of students including special needs students.
I teach in a classical style, including all scales and theory, using methods that have stood the test of time. I don’t think that 5 year olds should be taught in a private lesson setting. Until young children are able to read and understand my weekly lesson assignment and books, and practice independently, I won’t start them on regular lessons. If a student is not practicing or learning over the course of a few months I will stop their lessons. I refuse to take money from parents if their children are not engaged and working.
An acoustic piano is not absolutely required but encouraged for long term progress. Students using an electric keyboard, in my experience, can only progress up to a minimal point, about six months level.
I am welcome to work with siblings having a joint lesson if they are just starting and at the same level. I would also love to work with adults, especially parents of current students. Special needs students need to be taught to their own learning style and therefore my methods will not follow a prescribed plan. Parents or caregivers are an integral part of special students lessons and should be present during the lessons.
I would love to talk to you, as a parent or student, about how piano lessons fit into your life!
