About Me

For me, teaching piano is about much more than helping students play the correct notes on the page. It is about helping them develop their own intimate relationship with music. Over several years of teaching, my goal is to help students become curious, thoughtful, and independent musicians who feel comfortable exploring music independently.

One idea that shapes my teaching is the importance of listening. Many beginning students focus mostly on reading the notes or placing their fingers in the right spot, but they do not always think about the sound they are creating. I often encourage students to pause and really listen to what they just played. Questions like “Did that sound the way you wanted?” or “What could we change to make it more musical?” help students think more deeply about music. When students start listening more carefully, they begin to realize that music is not just about playing the right notes but about shaping sound in a meaningful and intentional way.

Teaching my own private piano students has given me another perspective on how different every student can be. Some students learn best by reading carefully from the score, while others respond more strongly to listening and imitation. Given the variety of personalities and learning styles, I tailor my teaching to meet each student's needs. For example, with younger beginners, I may spend more time on rhythm activities, pattern recognition, or simple improvisation, while more advanced students might focus on refining tone, phrasing, and interpretation.

Another important part of my teaching is helping students learn how to practice. Many students believe that practicing means simply playing a piece over and over again. I try to show them that practicing can be much more thoughtful than that. Breaking music into smaller sections, slowing down difficult passages, and identifying patterns in the music are all strategies that can make practice much more effective. When students begin to understand these strategies, they gradually become more independent and confident in their own learning.

At the end of the day, my motivation to teach comes from my love of music and my desire to share it with others. The piano has been a huge part of my life, and I hope to pass along the same sense of wonder and connection that I experience when I become absorbed in music while playing. Not every student will become a professional musician, but I hope that the time they spend learning music will help them develop curiosity, patience, and a deeper appreciation for sound. If students leave my lessons feeling excited about music and confident enough to continue exploring it on their own, then I feel that I have succeeded as a teacher.
