Learn Piano with Dorian Maverick
“I specialize in Reading Sheet Music, Lead Sheet Comping, and Music Theory And Ear Training”
About Me
Hi, I’m Maverick! I hold a bachelors of music degree from Berkee College of Music in composition and performance. I have been teaching piano, voice, guitar, bass guitar and ukulele for over a decade and I am an enthusiastic and very supportive teacher. I have experience in teaching neurodivergent students, and my studio is a safe space for students of all ages, students who are beginning musical study for the first time, students with anxiety and other mental illness, and students of a more advanced level looking to get to that next level of competency and confidence. I believe in incorporating music theory and ear training for a well-balanced development in every student - so that every part of your musical training supports every other aspect, so that my students can draw from multiple sources of knowledge to create impeccable musicianship. My specialties include traditional classical styles of learning, focusing on learning to read sheet music and play classical music with passion, and more contemporary styles of learning, including less of a focus on learning to read sheet music and more of a focus on learning chords and comping (grooving) skills that are applicable to jazz, rock, pop and funk styles. No matter how a student prefers to learn, I believe in following a student’s instincts and passion, and that there is no objectively correct place to start when it comes to learning an instrument. As the student progresses, starting with learning music they love to practice, eventually they will learn to read music notation and to be able to play from a lead sheet using their knowledge of chords and grooves. Come learn with me and we will find your favorite styles together!
When you send me a message with your lesson request, please let me know the style or styles of music that you’re interested in studying!

“For many years, I have been fortunate to sing in a choir where Maverick is a section leader. Her voice is powerful, expressive and beautiful! She also is a gifted teacher; during our rehearsals, she offers many extremely useful suggestions to other singers, and is always kind and encouraging. The members of our choir all feel so fortunate to have her as part of our ensemble. She also frequently sings solos in variety of styles, or as part of a small group, and the congregation loves her. Maverick is a gem! ”

“I came into piano lessons as a young adult, thinking the only way to learn was by learning to read sheet music and working through classical workbooks. But what I really wanted to do was play keys in a cover band. I thought I had to learn the classical way and then somehow I’d figure out how to play modern music but Maverick helped me jump straight to the skills I needed to start playing in my cover band! I learned how to read sheet music along the way and I’m actually pretty good at it, but we were able to focus on what she called “comping” which is like reading cord symbols instead of notes, which is a lot easier and then you just play in the groove/Rhythm of the other instruments in the band. It ended up taking a lot less time to reach my goals! ”
